Three ways to buy a car from Japan

If you want a car from Japan, you will deal with one of three types of supplier: a Japan car auction agent, a full-service Japanese used car exporter, or a stock dealer. All three can get you a good car. They differ in what you pay, how much choice you get, how fast the car arrives, and how much of the work and risk sits with you.

Our Vehicle Sourcing Team has worked in the Japanese used vehicle trade for 14 years, buying at auction and from stock for dealers and private buyers in the UK, Ireland, Cyprus,USA and Pakistan. This guide explains each option the way we explain it to new customers.

use an auction agent if you are an experienced trade buyer who wants the lowest price and can handle shipping and compliance yourself. Use a full-service exporter if you want auction prices with the bidding, export and shipping handled for you. Buy from stock if you need a specific car quickly and want a fixed price with no bidding.

What each type of supplier does

Japan car auction agent

Japanese car auctions such as USS, TAA and CAA are dealer-only, so overseas buyers cannot bid directly. A Japanese car buying agent holds auction membership and places bids on your behalf. You pay the hammer price, auction fees and the agent's fee, which may be a flat amount per car or a percentage.

The agent's job often ends when the car is bought. Depending on the agent, you may need to arrange inland transport, shipping, insurance and customs yourself. That suits importers who already have a freight forwarder and know their country's rules. For a first-time buyer, it leaves a lot of room for expensive mistakes.

Full-service Japanese used car exporter

A full-service exporter also bids at auction for you, but handles everything after the hammer falls: payment to the auction, inland transport to port, the export certificate, freight, insurance and the documents your customs office needs. You get one itemised quote and one point of contact.

This is the model most of our customers use. You still get access to the full auction market, which runs to tens of thousands of cars a week across Japan, and you can follow live listings on our Japanese car auctions page. Our step-by-step auction guide shows how the process runs from bid to delivery.

Stock dealer

A stock dealer has already bought the car, either at auction or from a leasing company, rental agent or tender. You see the exact car, its photos and auction sheet, and pay a fixed price. There is no bidding and no chance of being outbid.

Stock cars usually cost a little more than the same car won at auction, because the supplier has already paid for it and carries the risk of it not selling. In return, the car can ship straight away. You can browse our current Japanese used cars for sale by make, body type and destination country.

Which supplier suits you?

You are a dealer restocking every month

Dealers in the UK and Ireland increasingly source direct from Japan. Irish registrations of Japan-sourced used cars rose almost 20% in the first nine months of 2025, with the VW Golf, VW Polo and Audi A3 leading by volume (Autotrade.ie, citing Cartell and SIMI data). For regular volume, a full-service exporter that can bid on several cars a week and consolidate them into one container usually gives the best balance of price and effort. See shared vs dedicated containers for how that cuts freight costs.

You are importing your first car

Choose a full-service exporter or a stock car. Both give you one supplier who is responsible for the car reaching your port with the right paperwork. Before you pay anyone, run the checks in our guide on how to choose a reliable Japanese used car exporter.

You want a rare or very specific model

Auction access matters most here, because the right car may appear only a few times a year. A full-service exporter or agent can watch auctions for you. You can also request a specific car and let the buyers search for it.

You need the car within weeks

Buy from stock. You skip the bidding stage, and the car can be booked onto the next available ship. Typical shipping times from Japan are 4 to 6 weeks to the UK and Ireland, 3 to 5 weeks to Cyprus and 6 to 8 weeks to Pakistan.

Costs to compare before you choose

Whichever route you take, compare the landed cost, not the headline price. A low agent fee can turn into a higher total once you add your own freight, insurance and customs broker. Ask every supplier for an itemised quote covering the car, auction fees, service fee, inland transport, export certificate, freight, insurance and inspection. Our 2026 import cost breakdown shows what each line should look like.

Always check the auction sheet, whichever supplier you use. Our free auction sheet translator helps you read the grade and damage notes yourself.

How Nobuko Japan works

We work as a full-service exporter and a stock supplier. Our buyers bid at Japanese auctions on your behalf, and we also source cars from tenders, leasing companies and rental agents across Japan, which is where much of our ready-to-ship stock comes from. You can see how we charge on our service plans page and our payment rules in our terms of trade.

Frequently asked questions

Can I bid at Japanese car auctions myself?

No. Japanese auctions are open only to licensed members, so overseas buyers need an auction agent or exporter with membership.

Is a Japan car auction agent cheaper than an exporter?

The agent's fee is often lower, but you then pay for shipping, insurance and customs handling separately. Compare the full landed cost from both before deciding.

Are stock cars from Japan more expensive than auction cars?

Usually a little, because the supplier has already bought the car. You pay for certainty and speed: no bidding, a fixed price and faster shipping.

Which option is best for UK dealers?

Most UK dealers buying regularly use a full-service exporter for auction cars and top up with stock cars when they need something quickly.
