Why your supplier matters more for Pakistan than anywhere else

Many buyers start by searching for a Japanese car exporter for Pakistan. What they really need is a supplier who understands Pakistan's import rules as well as Japan's auctions. Pakistan has stricter and more frequently changing rules than most markets: age limits tied to manufacture date, scheme-specific paperwork, pre-shipment inspection and port charges that grow every day a car waits. A small mistake on the Japan side can leave a car stuck at Port Qasim.

Pakistan was the first market our Vehicle Sourcing Team built our content around, and we have supplied Japanese cars to Pakistani buyers for years. This guide covers the 2026 rules, what to expect at clearance, realistic lead times and what to ask any supplier before you pay.

choose a Japanese used car supplier that checks your car's eligibility by manufacture date, prepares documents in the correct names for your import scheme, arranges pre-shipment inspection, declares the true value, and coordinates with your clearing agent in Karachi. From purchase to clearance, plan on roughly 6 to 8 weeks.

One caution: some industry sources note that the original notification said the commercial age limit may be removed after 30 June 2026, subject to standards (UKA Japan). Confirm the latest notification with your clearing agent before buying an older car commercially. For the full process, read our step-by-step guide to importing a used Japanese car to Pakistan.

What to ask a Japanese car supplier for Pakistan

Do they check eligibility by manufacture date?

For Gift and Transfer of Residence imports, the 3-year limit is measured from the manufacture date, not the model year or first registration in Japan. A good supplier checks the exact manufacture month before bidding and tells you the latest date the car can arrive and still qualify.

Will the documents match your scheme?

Each scheme has its own requirements for whose name appears on the documents and who pays. Under the Gift scheme, for example, the overseas sender and the recipient in Pakistan both have to be documented correctly. Ask your supplier to confirm the names on the invoice and bill of lading before shipping, because correcting them afterwards is slow and costly.

Do they arrange pre-shipment inspection?

Pakistan requires inspection in Japan, and commercial imports are moving to inspection by approved Japanese firms. Your supplier should arrange it and send you the certificate with the other shipping documents.

Do they declare the real value?

Pakistan Customs assesses used vehicles using its own valuation, so an artificially low invoice won't reduce your duty, and it can cause problems at clearance. Avoid any supplier who offers to under-declare.

How do they take payment?

Payment should go by bank transfer to the supplier's company account in Japan. For Gift imports, check that the payment comes from the right person, as the scheme requires. Our guide to deposits, payments and avoiding scams explains what to look for, and how to choose a reliable Japanese car supplier lists 10 checks.

Clearing your car at Port Qasim

Most cars shipped from Japan to Pakistan arrive at Karachi, through Port Qasim or Karachi Port. Clearance usually follows these steps:

  1. Arrival. The ship arrives and the cargo is recorded at the port.
  2. Goods declaration. Your clearing agent files the goods declaration with Pakistan Customs, attaching your documents.
  3. Examination and assessment. Customs may inspect the car, then assesses duties and taxes.
  4. Payment. You pay the duties and taxes through the bank.
  5. Release. The car is released from the port once duties and port charges are paid.
  6. Registration. The car is registered with your provincial Excise and Taxation department.

Documents to have ready

  • Bill of lading
  • Commercial invoice
  • Japanese export certificate
  • Pre-shipment inspection certificate
  • Scheme documents, such as passport copies and proof of overseas residence
  • Proof of payment through banking channels

Send scanned copies to your clearing agent before the ship arrives. Missing originals are the most common cause of delay.

Realistic lead times

From purchase to clearance, most orders take roughly 6 to 8 weeks. The main stages are:

StageWhat can slow it down
Buying the carBeing outbid at auction, or waiting for the right car to appear
Inspection and export paperworkInspection bookings and deregistration in Japan
Sailing to KarachiVessel schedules; the sea voyage itself is usually around two weeks (JPSheet)
Clearance at portMissing documents, customs examination or delays in paying duty

How to avoid delays and port charges

  • Appoint your clearing agent before the car ships, not after it arrives.
  • Check names and details on every document before the car is loaded.
  • Have funds ready for duties and taxes so the car isn't waiting on payment.
  • For Gift and Transfer of Residence imports, leave a safety margin on the age limit in case of shipping delays.
  • Check the auction sheet and chassis number before buying. Our guides to reading an auction sheet and checking history by chassis number show you how.

Cars that wait at the port build up storage and demurrage charges every day, which can quickly erase any saving on the car itself. To see which models make most sense after the latest duty changes, read which Japanese cars are more affordable in Pakistan after duty cuts.

Frequently asked questions

How old can a Japanese car be for import to Pakistan in 2026?

Can I still import a car under the Personal Baggage scheme?

No. The Personal Baggage scheme was abolished in January 2026. Only the Gift and Transfer of Residence schemes remain for personal imports.

How long does it take to import a car from Japan to Pakistan?

Usually about 6 to 8 weeks from purchase to clearance, depending on auction timing, vessel schedules and how quickly documents and duty payments are completed.

Do I need a clearing agent at Port Qasim?

Yes, in practice. A licensed clearing agent files your goods declaration and handles customs and port procedures.
